Customer Review: Listen before you buy!
I find all Mz Farley’s CD’s problematic. Her programmes are wonderfully inventive, well-researched and unusual. Her diction is fantastic no matter in which language she happens to be singing. To my ears her intonation never falters. Yet each time I buy one of her discs in the hope of finding something satisfying I am always left disappointed. The problem is simply her voice. I can not stand the timbre. It sounds breathy and whiney and I can barely listen to the end of a song, let alone an entire disc. It is very sad for me that with all the great singers out there, that this one is getting recital gems such as Prokofiev, Lecuona, Milhaud, Rorem, Bolcom (the last two even with the composers at the piano!) and so many more… In the “lighter” repertoire such as this disc, she goes for a coy and swooning sound that simply sounds fake and unpleasantly manufactured. LISTEN before you buy. If the voice is to your taste you will be pleased by this and other discs by this performer. John Constable is an amazing accompanist in any repertoire, and I can only express surprise that he works so much with this singer. I simply find the quality of her vocal instrument extremely unpleasant. I do not want to make nasty comments about her famous husband’s connections, but I am astounded each time that this voice is given this level of exposure.
Customer Review: Much to Enjoy, But…
I was also very pleased to find so many fine songs nicely interpreted in one place. For the most part, I found Ms. Farley’s lightening of her voice reasonably effective, but not so in the Gershwin songs. These I found almost unlistenable. Frankly, I found myself wondering if she was imitating Joan Morris’ nearly perfect renditions of “Isn’t It a Pity” and “How Long Has This Been Going On,” (Gershwin: Piano Music) with unfortunate results. I’m probably being unfair, given the fact that I enjoy most of the rest of Farley’s performances. And I have certainly admired her work in other recordings, as well. But if you love Morris’ performances of the Gershwin, you may wish to listen to the samples before you buy.

Lady Terminator

Customer Review: An Instant Classic !!!!
This is a classic action pacted movie that should have garnered Academy consideration. Christopher J.Hart’s depiction of the newest super-hero, Max Monroe, is nothing short of Oscar Worthy. You will be on the edge of your seat the whole time. Fight scenes are relentness. Unfortuneately, due to a terrible cocaine addiction, this was Chris’s final major movie role. But due to his passionate love scene in the movie, my contacts have told me he did find much work in the porn industry.
Customer Review: How can anyone hate this?
Wow, I’m surprised that people hate this and gave it anything less than 5 stars. We have non-stop blasting machine guns at a Terminator rip-off chick possessed by some Goddess that wants to kill the relative (a bad 80’s pop singer) of some dude that made her stop her evil men killing ways (she killed the men after having sex with them of course). Pretty much, this movie rules! Best part is when a group of bonehead macho guys that look like G.I.Joe action figures come to life start cussing out Lady Terminator and attacking her with everything they got (tanks, rockets, machine guns), resulting in various explosions. The movie ends with the most profound words I’ve ever heard too, more profound than anything by a poet or philosopher, here they are: “The struggles in our souls is never ending, the life of man is short and brutal, torn between good and evil, of the eternity around us, we know nothing. The stars look on. They have been here long before mankind appeared on our small planet..and will be here long after we are no more” ~ Dramatic Narrator in Lady Terminator

Welsh constable Evan Evans knows that village life is not as peaceful as it seems–and now his job takes a turn toward the tragic when the man accused of killing his father is accused of murder once again.

Customer Review: A Weak Entry in a Great Series
When foot and mouth disease makes its way to Wales, Constable Evan Evans finds himself caught between his job and his friends in the village. When his boss offers him time off, he and his fiancee Bronwen decide to go visit each other’s family. They’ve hardly arrived at Mrs. Evans in Swansea before they get the news. The young man who killed Evan’s father years ago has just been arrested for another murder. Called into the hearing to keep him in jail without bail, Evan makes a startling discovery - he thinks the kid is innocent this time. Now he must sneak around behind the backs of the police and his mother to find the real killer. But will he alienate all those he loves as a result? Normally, I love this series. It’s a light, fun excursion to a part of the world I would love to visit. This book was a disappointment, however. The tone of the book is significantly darker then the others in the series, not providing the escape I was looking for. The biggest problem is the plot. It starts rather slowly and doesn’t really get rolling until about a third of the way into the book. Then, I had everything but the motive figured out about 80 pages before the end. On the bright side, we get to see significantly more of Bronwen then normal, and her interaction with Evan is some of the best in the series. She definitely needs more page time in future books. This book has some great moments and fans of the series will certainly enjoy it. But if you’re new to this great series, don’t start here and don’t judge the entire series by this book.
Customer Review: Balance Needed Here
This series has swung from Disney to Grimm Brothers. The early fuzzy-bunny books were “charming” to the point of cloying, but if I have to choose one style or the other, I’ll take the Disney style over the grimness of this book. I could not bear to read of the herds and flocks being destroyed. Bad enough it was all over the news; do I have to find it in my escape reading also? I’m going to be very careful about any Rhys Bowen purchases in the future, instead of treating her works as virtually auto-buys.

Evan Evans is settling into his role as Constable of Llanfair, a small town nestled in the mountains of North Wales. Here, he has been a mediator of the minor disputes of the locals, between competing ministers, country merchants, and seemingly every Welch eccentric throughout the region. But an unusual series of events brings unseen hostilities to light, and Evan realizes just how deep the townsfolk’s passions and hostilities lie.

While the village of Llanfair has always been at odds with the neighboring town of Beddgelert, an intriguing archeological find in the nearby hills brings that rivalry to dangerous extremes, and creates a circus of local enthusiasm and gossip. The circus quickly turns deadly, however, when Llanfair’s prodigal son, Ted Morgan, announces plans to erect an amusement park over the site’s excavation. Soon Constable Evans is drawn into a whirl of cultural pride, deception, and greed, and while he’s at it uncovers the town’s undaunted ambition - to earn the right to the longest name in the world.

With the warmth, charm, and wry sense of humor that won readers’ hearts in Evans Above, Rhys Bowen offers a delightful new installment to an already cherished mystery series.

Customer Review: Innocence and Murder
I have enjoyed ALL of Rhys Bowen’s murder mysteries. I write this review of the Constable Evans book because Rhys will no longer be writing this series. This is a big disappointment as I enjoyed the innate goodness of Constable Evans and his struggles with humanity in a small slice of earth that struggles with it’s own history and growth. I have collected all the paperbacks of this series and I guess I’ll just have to keep reading them over and over.
Customer Review: This book made me want to visit Wales
That’s surprising given I’ve been to Wales and it was very foggy and damp — but the Wales described in this book is a wonderful place indeed — beautiful and filled with kind, caring people (who unfortunately for any outsider speak Welsh!) This is the second book in the series — I’m reading them in order — and I think I liked it better than the first. I thought at first I had everything all figured out, and was disappointed, but as it turned out, I wasn’t even close. That’s a great mystery. Add to that a wonderful world you enter when you read this book… The plot involves a summer resident (a retired Colonel living on a pension who comes to this tiny village in Wales every year for a holiday) who is found dead right after he’s discovered some ruins. The local constable, Evan Evans, immediately believes he was murdered, but the police higher up the chain of command try to insist it’s an accident. Then there is another death — made to look like a suicide. Is there one killer or two? Evans gets involved in trying to find the connection between these two deaths as the key to discovering what happened. All in all, a great book to curl up with when you have the time to read uninterrupted — it creates a wonderful mood.

Customer Review: out of this world
I don’t know how they managed to pick the best of performers and performances for this selection. First of all, “Porgi, amor” (from Figaro) by Lucia Popp, “Ach, ich fuhl” (Magic Flute)by Margaret Price and “Et incarnatus est” (Mass in C minor) by Sylvia McNair are generally considered the best in their respective pieces, compared to their counterparts. Angela Maria Blasi is beautifully expressive in “L’amero, Saro Costante” from Il Re Pastore. Sylvia McNair is equally amazing in “Tu virginum corona” from Exsultate Jubilate. The duet “Sull’aria” is sung by Lucia Popp and Barbara Hendricks under Marriner’s conducting.. the names alone would guarantee a satisfactory performance and indeed it is heavenly, even though some people can find its tempo too fast compared to the one conducted by Giulini, but it’s just a matter of taste. One of my favorite in this recording is Mitsuko Shirai singing the less well-known but equally sublime “Panis Vivus” from the Litaniae de venerabili altaris sacramento. It’s just gorgeous ! Mozart’s faithful fans would usually collect his complete work per recording, not a “various-artists” kind like this one. But if you sometime want to listen only to his soothing music with vocals, this is the perfect choice. It would also make a great collection for new enthusiasts of classical music.

Interesting movie. unfortunately I had this DVD replaced three times and still didn’t get a copy that wasn’t damaged. The outside packaging in perfect condition. The inside product not good. All three replacements were damaged before being sent to me this was evident by the appearance of plastic wrap on DVD being scuffed and bits falling out of the DVD case that were broken. Evan’s Gate (Constable Evans Mysteries)
The village of Llanfair is consumed by the wedding plans of Evan Evans and his fiance Bronwen. He wishes they’d leave him in peace to build Bronwen the dream house he’s been promising her. When he finds a beautiful shepard’s cottage in need of renovation he’s thrilled, until he discovers the skeleton of a young child buried in the front yard. It’s decades old, but the discovery eerily coincides with a present day missing child case that’s suddenly taking up all of Evan’s time. Evan dives into both, and soon realizes that if he can solve the decades-old death he just might find a crucial insight into the whereabouts of the child missing in the present day.

Customer Review: guess I’m the only one who hated it
This book was grotesque. And here is why - our constable training to be a detective, without any hardcore facts or scientific evidence, confronts a family about their missing daughter/sibling and informs them that in all likelihood he has found her body. He does this on a hunch and at a party! No forensics at this point has confirmed the identification. Personally, in any police force across the world he would have been quickly demoted and kicked to the curb for improperly approaching the family without going through his superiors. Bowen also has her facts all screwed up about how the police give information to the media - it’s done only by an appointed Public Relations officer, not one of run-of-the-mill detectives. Next they bring the family to identify a skeleton? Obviously this author knows nothing, absolutely nothing, about how the police force works. I am sure even in small Wales, they have procedure and I can make you a bet it goes something like this: when the girl went missing a file was formed giving any relevant, identifying information, including dental. If no dental, broken bones etc… then the only positive identification that would be accepted in this day and age would be DNA no matter how “expensive” Ms. Bowen thinks it is. In no way shape or form would the family be brought in to look at an unidentified skeleton and then trotted off to have their mouths swabbed for DNA! The police came across as idiots and unfeeling throughout the entire book. And Evan? Does he inform his fiancee that he found a body and then shows any second thoughts living in a house where a body of girl he used to know was found? Heck no. He’s too busy hanging out at the pub or running off to tell the girl’s family members they might be suspects. And it only gets worse from there. The side mystery of the newly missing girl is grossly apparent from page one when it is introduced. To compare this story to the works of Agatha Christie is laughable. All you have to do is read the statements of the people he interviews about the weather and you know from the beginning what is really happening. Extremely weak. Sorry folks go read Hamish Macbeth if you want something that will actually make you think instead of laugh or throw the book against the wall. P.S. and it’s an old wives tale that sucking your thumb gives you buck teeth - but this one of the methods of identifying a skeleton! MY GOD let’s hope I never die in Wales!
Customer Review: Light, maybe, but deep
Evan’s Gate Rhys Bowen I pick up one of Rhys Bowen’s “Evan” mysteries whenever I’m in need of a fairly quick relaxing read. I know I can rely on this writer, and this series, to give me a thoroughly professional job of writing. Plot, characters, pacing, setting - all are first rate, but unless you are reviewing the book you don’t even notice any of them, they’re that good. Evan, the Welsh policeman, bridges the two worlds, the ancient Celtic culture of Wales and the trendy life in the present day British Isles. He is most at home in the Welsh culture of yesteryear but his work and his life demand that he keep up with changing times. Many of us feel for him in this dilemma. In this story the apparent abduction of a little girl resonates with Evan as the discovery of another child’s body on his own land reminds him of another child who disappeared years ago in the area. As he searches for the present day missing child he wonders ever more deeply about the other child. Are there any links here? Could one of his childhood friends possibly be the murderer of one, or both little girls? As you relax and enjoy the gentle tongue-in-cheek humor of Rhys Bowen you are led into much deeper waters than you expected. Very gently she presents both sides of child custody battles. Evan’s quest to locate the missing child leads to his personal journey of self-discovery. The final resolution, Evan’s realization of who might be responsible for the child’s body found lying near his own new home, digs deeper than you might expect from an apparently light read. I enjoyed this book thoroughly. On the one hand it was an easy read, the settings well drawn, the characters vivid and true to life, the writing fresh. On the other hand it left me thinking more deeply. The writer appealed to her readers on several levels and left at least this reader satisfied. Not many light mystery novels accomplish so much.

Customer Review: Tha ace of aces !
Erich Hartmann’s life would be the perfect script for an Hollywood movie. In only 30 months on the eastern front, he shot down more planes than anyone else during World War two. Then, he was a political prisoner for the Russians during 10 long years. Only his enduring love for his wife Ursula gave him the force to survive this terrible ordeal. After all this, he rejoined the Luftwaffe and still served his divised country until 1970.Finally, he enjoyed a well deserved retirement until his death in 1993. Still, he had time to witness the reunification of his country. The book of Mr. Toliver is the definitive biography of the blond knight of Germany! There’s a few errors regarding the dates of some events but overall, it’s a fascinating story to read. Enjoy !
Customer Review: Hartmann’s score will never be surpassed
It is, perhaps, unamazing that Hartmann’s incredible lethality is lost in accolade’s to our far less dangerous allied pilots. Hartmann was, after all, the “enemy.” Still, it is a great shame that the greatest ace who ever lived has been virtually relocated to the dustbin of history. I know all the arguments: “Harmannn fought primarily against “inferior” Russions pilots; Hartmann’s victory numbers were inflated; Hartmann fought for years ad nauseum.” Well, we can’t be certain and, odds are great, that he didn’t shoot down a precise total of 352. Post WW II studies, indicate that fighter pilots overstate their kills by an average of fifty percent. There is, after all, the fog of combat with multiple pilots–who may be unaware of each other–ganging up on the same aircraft. One aircraft shot down is multiplied by the number of pilots shooting at it. There’s also the issue of unsubstantiated claims i.e. the aircraft “going down in flames” that miraculously survives. There’s also that oldest of human sins–false witness. Fighter pilots, eager for accolades, sometimes overstate their own prowess. Hartmann would seem to be free of most of these faults. In this reading, he has clearly forgotten most of the combats he participated in. This is entirely natural. No one could remember over 300 kills, no matter how dramatic. No one could remember the details. Make no mistake, a liar would “remember” them well. He could recite every emotion, every scene, every smell. Hartmann’s memory seems hazy which, in my opinion, confirms his incredible score. Was he the “greatest” ace of all? Who knows? Marseilles is is usually given credit for this distinction, which is fine. 157 western allies kills in less than a year was an incredible fete in and of itself. He was unfortunate enough to die in an accident else his score would have gone higher. Then again what is survival–and high scores–but a turn of fate? This introduces a more basic question. Were the Germans, overall, better fighter pilots than were the allies? After all, the top fifty German pilots are reported to have shot down over 10,000 aircraft whereas the top 50 western allied pilots shot down fewer than 2,000. Many critics argue that this was because most of Germany’s great aces fought on the Eastern Front. Others have said, with more justification, that the Germans weren’t rotated home. They fought until they died. I don’t know. Certainly the Germans weren’t and aren’t supermen but they did have a strong tradition of military excellence and order–yes–and of suicidal heroism. The most interesting part of this book, because it was burned into Hartmann’s brain, is the last which involves his confinement as a POW and ten years in a concentration camp. We learn of allied atrocities. German men, children and women, guarded by the Americans are turned over to the Soviets. The Russians immediately–before the Americans are even out of sight–start to rape and murder. By Nuremburg standards the Americans, especially those who ordered the turn-over [FDR], are equally complicit with the Russian rapists. The others “were just taking orders.” No matter. It happened and there was no punishment. Hartman, against all logic, remained in prison for ten years. It was unjust, to be certain, but this is exactly the same punishment the Soviets meted out to their own citizens unfortunate enough to be picked up as German slave laborers. They had been too long out of Soviet thought control and the Soviets needed a few years “to get their minds right.” Ron Braithwaite author of novels–”Skull Rack” and “Hummingbird God”–on the Conquest of Mexico

Rock My World

Customer Review: for a bit of British light-heartedness try this flick
A light-hearted comedy about a pair of English aristocrats forced to rent out their estate to an American band and pose as their servants. This is a vehicle solely for the enhancement of Peter O’Toole and no one else. Alicia Silverstone is completely underused, with her supporting role barely a bit more than a cameo; it could’ve been anyone else in that role and the movie would’ve still been the same. This movie is okay to watch on a rainy afternoon, while you are channel surfing.
Customer Review: A Fun Fave
I think the negative critics take this movie a little too seriously…it’s meant to be just plain fun and it succeeds! O’Toole and Plowright are adorable and the rest of the cast mesh really well. The icing on the cake is the excellent music!! I’m so mad they didn’t make a soundtrack! If you’re interested, however, the band Casino that played most of the songs (along with Northstar which is a separate band by the by) is now called SpiderSimpson. The lead singer is the actually the guy who wrote/co-wrote the songs in the movie. You can find them on MySpace or their EP album on iTunes which has 3 excellent songs!
