Price: $19.99
Customer Review: French disguised as British
The movie may be worth more than 2 stars, but this is a generous rating for the DVD. The sound is distorted and fuzzy. All dialog is dubbed in the continental fashion of the time. It was very difficult to tell what was being said, however much of the humor was visual. Alas, the picture has been haphazardly cropped to full screen and some significant action cannot be seen, in addition to closing titles running off screen. Colors are quite drab. You never know what quality to expect from a Wham!USA disc - I have some British comedies that are near perfect in picture and sound, and others suffer the same fate as this. All this took away from my enjoyment of the movie itself. I might have a more favorable experience with a restored widescreen transfer with cleaned up sound. Then again, the music felt much more French than British. I guess I’m just spoiled by Carry On series and the Doctor movies.
Customer Review: The Counterfeit Constable-British Slapstick
If you like the dry, British sense of humor, you will enjoy this film. There are some especially funny moments in the first 20 minutes. Mark Lester made his first film appearance in The Counterfeit Constable, and appears periodically throughout the story as part of a sort of running gag. He was 2 1/2 at the time. There are several foot chases and close calls, reminiscent of Benny Hill. This is an entertaining movie, full of broad, slapstick humor. There is very mild sexual content, no objectionable language, and no violence. The Counterfeit Constable is completely suitable for family viewing.

The interpretations of the Laudate Dominum and Laudate Pueri of the Vespers are simply the stuff of heaven, and the rest of the recording just knocks it out of the park. Colin Davis’ direction is wonderful, and the chorus and soloists, to include the marvelous Kiri Te Kanawa, are top notch. I highly recommend this recording to any fan of Mozart’s sacred music.
Customer Review: Mozart treasures.
I bought this recording on LP in the late 1970’s. The performances by Sir Colin Davis and the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, with Kiri Te Kanawa, Elizabeth Bainbridge, Ryland Davies and Gwynne Howell are all very good. Sir Colin’s reading of “Ave Verum Corpus” is beautifully serene, so much so that I had it played at my mother’s funeral in 1980. This sublime motet, composed in 1791, the year of Mozart’s death, is thought to have been written for the service of Corpus Christi and dedicated to Anton Stoll, a worthy school teacher in Baden, near Vienna. Stoll’s kindnesses were so appreciated by the composer that he wrote for him what Paumgartner described as “perhaps the loftiest work of art that Mozart has created.” Considering the greatness of the large body of Mozart’s work, that is, indeed, lofty praise. I would not be without this CD, which is worth the small price just for Ave Verum Corpus alone. But you won’t be disappointed with the other works on this CD either.

This time they have allowed us to hear some of the great Dame’s work from 1968 and 1970 at the Aldeburgh festival and from their own studios. Baker was in her prime around then, and I certainly have to agree with the somewhat gushing liner-note that we can hear her at her very best on this disc. The selection itself greatly appeals to me. I already owned Schumann’s Frauenliebe cycle (given in full here) done by von Otter, and also Wolf’s Spanish songbook from Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau out of which she gives us two numbers, so it is fascinating now to own Baker’s versions of these. I expect shortly to own the complete Strauss songs from Fischer-Dieskau, but the two Schubert songs are completely new to me, the other two Schumann songs may or may not be, and although I have heard Haydn’s Arianna before it’s not something one hears each time one turns on the radio, and I welcome it also as a new treasure in my collection. Despite having the `atmosphere’ that comes from a live session, the Aldeburgh items are less vivid on account of the recording. It’s not bad by any means, but the piano sound is rather heavy, and this bothers me just slightly in the Frauenliebe songs and unslightly in the Haydn. This composition is a chamber cantata with piano accompaniment giving us the anguished sentiments of Ariadne as she longs successively for Theseus and for death. It takes rather over a quarter of an hour, dividing in roughly equal parts into two `recitatives’ and two arias, the `recitatives’ being more what we would usually call scenas. There is some lovely and committed singing from Dame Janet here, as indeed there also is in the Schumann. Dame Janet does not choose to sock the latter to us in the way von Otter characteristically does, and I shall always have a particular fondness for von Otter’s exuberant Er der Herrlichste, but I can take it done with a little more maidenly decorum as well, and Baker is outstanding is the grief-laden final song. I just wish that the recording had had a little more immediacy about it. That lack is rectified in the BBC’s studio recordings, and they give us a chance to hear Baker in full voice. The recording may still not be quite up to 2005 standard, but it should not bother anyone either. Schubert, Schumann, Wolf and Strauss all find the singer right at the top of her form, and the piano is distinctly better treated by the recording. I wonder how many of Schubert’s 606 songs I actually know, but the theoretical maximum before hearing this recital was 604. The two here are high-quality Schubert, and Der blinde Knabe is actually a translation of Cibber’s tear-jerker The Blind Boy, which many will recall from our schooldays. The translation is by one Craigher, and I don’t know whether this is the author of the poem to a more famous Schubert masterpiece The Young Nun, although I suppose that’s likely. No texts are provided, and the liner-note is an exasperating string of platitudes and ooh-ah. One reads `These performances give unalloyed pleasure’. Says who, pray? My pleasure is a little alloyed by the recording at Aldeburgh, if I may say so. We also learn `What singles out Dame Janet’s interpretations…is a complete identification with each piece…’ Is this saying that no other singer does that, and if not what (if anything) is it saying? Nevertheless I remain grateful to the BBC for this superb disc. It’s an exhibition disc, letting us hear one great singer and artist at her best, and that does not dispose me to make laborious comparisons. Amid their preoccupations with charters, licence-fees, management restructuring, efficiency drives, digital television and other earthly concerns I hope fervently that they will continue to build up their golden treasury and to keep sharing it with the rest of us.
Customer Review: Extraordinary!
Janet Baker was probably the finest singer produced by the UK, and she is in remarkably fine fettle here: passionate, expressive, fulsome, even expansive. Her live performances as captured here have little of the finicky-ness of some of her studio recordings, but have greater staying power as a result. The Frauenliebe is rivalled only by Brigitte Fassbaender’s extraordinary recording, and certainly eclipses Baker’s two studio recordings of the cycle. Do yourself a favor and bathe in this one. It’s glorious!

When Constable Evan Evans is persuaded to join the local male choir for the upcoming eisteddfod (cultural festival), he doesn’t think the addition of his mediocre voice will do them much good. In spite of all the effort that choirmaster Mostyn Phillips puts in to the choir, it is not exactly first class. Hope arrives in the form of world renowned tenor Ifor Llewelyn, come home to Llanfair to rest, on doctor’s orders.

Llewelyn immediately sets about renewing old friendships, and Mostyn even persuades him to sing with the choir. But Ifor isn’t in Llanfair long before the residents decide that his presence is a mixed blessing. Noisy fights between Ifor and his wife, a threatening stranger, and Ifor’s own warped sense of humor make life in Llanfair increasingly tense. When he announces that he is planning to write his memoirs, telling all about his numerous relationships with famous and infamous women, he jokes that some people won’t be happy. But is someone unhappy enough to commit murder to stop him? While tracking down a dangerous killer, Constable Evans also manages to navigate the treacherous waters of neighborhood rivalries, lusty barmaids, and local gossip.

With her third book in this acclaimed series, Rhys Bowen offers another page-turning tale of small-town mayhem and murder.

List Price: $22.95
Used Price: $1.48
Customer Review: EVANLY CHOIRS - iachyd da!
Last week, I discovered the Constable Evans mysteries and am now going thru ‘em like they’re gas cards. EVANLY CHOIRS (1999) is the third book in the series and it’s another good ‘un. Author Rhys Bowen excels in bringing to life the day-to-day, as well as the occasionally shady, goings-on in the sleepy, mountainous village of Llanfair, North Wales. What also adds to the homey, small town feel of the book is the cast of endearingly quirky characters imbued with colorful names such as Evans-the-Meat, Evans-the-Post, Roberts-the-Pump, Harry-the-Pub, etc. The antics of Llanfair’s two dueling reverends - whose respective chapels stubbornly face off across the street from each other - are also an ongoing treat. Evan Evans, known as Evans-the-Law, continues to be ingratiating as the pleasant and unassuming village bobby who inevitably becomes mired in corpses but who usually ends up solving the murder cases, much to the chagrin of his snobbish ranking superior D.I. Hughes, who toils in the next town over and who looks down on our protagonist. This time out, things are hopping in the usually serene Llanfair. It’s time for the eisteddfod, the annually held Welsh cultural gathering, and Constable Evans has been tapped to lend his amateurish voice to the competing local choir. The odds of winning are very slim until world renowned but volatile tenor Ifor Llewellyn, a local boy made very good, comes home on a medical sabbatical and is talked into joining the Llanfair choir. However, Ifor proves to be a difficult customer to deal with, as he callously engages in loud, late night arguments and exhibits a cruel side in his dealings with choir director Austin Mostyn. Soon, the excesses of the famous opera singer come to haunt him and embroils Evan Evans and his friend Sgt. Watkins in a hunt for a killer as Llanfair is rocked with yet another puzzling murder. The murder mystery holds enough fascination (not that it’s the conundrum of the century or anything, mind you) that dedicated clue chasers will come out of this feeling contented. EVANLY CHOIRS goes down easy, like a mug of hot cocoa, and will leave the reader with a warm, toasty feeling. The Constable Evans series is a comfortable throwback to the books I grew up reading from authors like Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. The leisurely pace, the bucolic settings, and the memorable characters definitely are a callback to a different era. Several notches below the energy and high tension level of a James Patterson or a Jeffrey Deaver book, Rhys Bowen instead invites her reader to take a deep breath, take in the mountain scenery, listen to the flavors and rhythms of the Welsh language (she does throw in a smattering of Welsh in her characters’ conversations), and while away some moments in the diverting company of Evan Evans and his opinionated and sometimes very insular village flock. Bowen’s recipe to success includes equal portions of crime drama and pastoral vignette. She also mixes in a dash of quiet humor, a blossoming romance, and an unobstrusive insight into small town lifestyles and sensibilities. And, hey, if nothing else, EVANLY CHOIRS will have you hankering for your first pint of Brains beer.
Customer Review: About what you’d expect, I think
I’m giving this book a generous four stars because it delivers what it’s audience expects, almost to a tee (or is that tea?) As one does not expect Hemingway (or even Christie) in today’s light mystery, one can be satisfied with a light, weekend read. Ms. Bowen is even capable of a couple of nice twists in each of the first three Evans mysteries. (I’ve read the first three primarily on the strength of having lived in Wales a few years ago and feeling a bit nostalgiac!) I do like the characters, as well, though the supporting cast is pretty flat. My only complaint of any merit, and this is for the first two books, as well, is that the editing is extraordinarily lax. In one book Evan will have travelled from one town to another at the end of a chapter, only to be packing his bags to make that same trip at the beginning of the next. In this book, misspellings here and there, a character’s first name changing from Robert to John. They’re not glaring errors, but enough to take me out of the story. It costs the books a star in each case. I know, it’s nitpicking. Perhaps you wouldn’t even notice it if I didn’t bring it to your attention. Sorry for having done so. Iachyd da and happy reading!

List Price: $24.95
Amazon Price: $18.21
Used Price: $12.42
Customer Review: A Disappointment
Anxiously awaiting the next installment of the Lord Francis Powerscourt series, I pre-ordered this book. I’m sorry to say it was a disappointment. I WAS hoping this book would have less of the grizzly murder and torture scenes David Dickinson seemed to delight in in his previous books like Death of a Chancellor and Death on the Nevskii Prospekt. However, in Murder On The Holy Mountain there is only one murder, briefly described. At the very end of the book, almost as an afterthought, Dickinson mentions that, yes, the victim was horribly tortured. Oh. This book was SO tame it seemed like it was written by a different author. The book is short on story and long on filler. There is a sub-story about donkeys that goes nowhere. There are songs, poetry and even parts of the Latin Mass quoted liberally. If you’re looking for a mini-course in the woeful political history of Ireland, this book is for you. I found it distractingly didactic.
Customer Review: Excellent historical thriller
In 1905, though semi retired, English private investigator Lord Francis Powerscourt accompanied by his wife Lucy travel to Ireland to look into some odd art thefts. Someone is stealing low valued familial portraits from the mansions of Protestant Lords, but ignoring highly valuable masterpieces from some of the Masters. Francis struggles with the motive as money is obviously not the objective; so he assumes a political statement is being made. However, when the portraits with altered faces begin to reappear on the walls they were stolen from, Francis ponders even more the motive behind the crime. Soon after that the bewildered sleuth rescues kidnapped Protestant noblewomen from Irish nationalists but not before someone is murdered inside the chapel at Croagh Patrick while the pilgrimage has begun. Moving deeper into the Edwardian Era from the Victorian Age of much of the previous Powerscourt historical mysteries; David Dickinson provides a deep period piece. The story line obviously contains a strong investigative whodunit, but also much more as the audience obtains a feel for Ireland’s struggle to become a modern nation. Powerscourt personally feels the tugs, but it is the larger scale of early twentieth century pragmatism warring with rich ancient tradition that makes this book incredible. In this CD, the listener is treated to some of Bellini’s most cherished selections from the Bel Canto repetoire including: Capuleti Ed I Montecchi, Don Pasquale and La Sonambula. The CD is well produced with extended versions of arias placing the more familar arias in their musical context. Vocal acrobatics and piercing high notes are a gift to behold. Although the top register is clear it at time sounds pushed and somewhat shrill compared to the most colorful lower range. She brings drama and emotion to the arias and this diva should be remembered as one of the great coloratura’s along with Sutherland, Freni, Sumi Jo and of course Cecilia Bartoli. It is a shame that this Diva is now longer heard in most American Opera venues including the MET, but her differences with management and a volatile temper has truncated her career. Any fan of Bellini and the Bel Canto style will surely want to put this treasure in their collection
Customer Review: Beautiful Singing
That’s what Bel Canto means, “beautiful singing” — and that’s what Ms. Battle does here. It’s a style of operatic singing characterized by full, even tones and a brilliant display of vocal technique. Kathleen Battle is from my home town of Portsmouth, Ohio, (a fact of which we are all very proud), and I cannot adequately express how astounding her vocal abilities are. You’ll hear some of the finest examples of her excellence here. These are mostly arias from Italian Opera, all composed by three great masters of that art form, including Bellini, Rossini (my favorite), and, Donizetti. The London Philharmonic Orchestra (along with the Ambrosian Opera Chorus) provides the background music and it’s all flawlessly performed. This is a DDD recording. My highest recommendation for those who would like to hear the best of the best in Opera.
Continue …

The compilation is superb and I play it over and over again. My predicament now is that it was stolen with my notebook computer three months ago and have been looking forward to replacing it. I have tried most record stores but to no avail. If there is anyone out that can help me to locate one, I shall be very grateful.
Continue …

S. Bach, the two most stirring works are the Brandenburg 1 and 2. Having all of the Brandenburgs together, shows the ’story’ in music of this master of the musical notes.
Continue …
