Customer Review: A Weak Entry in a Great Series
When foot and mouth disease makes its way to Wales, Constable Evan Evans finds himself caught between his job and his friends in the village. When his boss offers him time off, he and his fiancee Bronwen decide to go visit each other’s family. They’ve hardly arrived at Mrs. Evans in Swansea before they get the news. The young man who killed Evan’s father years ago has just been arrested for another murder. Called into the hearing to keep him in jail without bail, Evan makes a startling discovery - he thinks the kid is innocent this time. Now he must sneak around behind the backs of the police and his mother to find the real killer. But will he alienate all those he loves as a result? Normally, I love this series. It’s a light, fun excursion to a part of the world I would love to visit. This book was a disappointment, however. The tone of the book is significantly darker then the others in the series, not providing the escape I was looking for. The biggest problem is the plot. It starts rather slowly and doesn’t really get rolling until about a third of the way into the book. Then, I had everything but the motive figured out about 80 pages before the end. On the bright side, we get to see significantly more of Bronwen then normal, and her interaction with Evan is some of the best in the series. She definitely needs more page time in future books. This book has some great moments and fans of the series will certainly enjoy it. But if you’re new to this great series, don’t start here and don’t judge the entire series by this book.
Customer Review: Balance Needed Here
This series has swung from Disney to Grimm Brothers. The early fuzzy-bunny books were “charming” to the point of cloying, but if I have to choose one style or the other, I’ll take the Disney style over the grimness of this book. I could not bear to read of the herds and flocks being destroyed. Bad enough it was all over the news; do I have to find it in my escape reading also? I’m going to be very careful about any Rhys Bowen purchases in the future, instead of treating her works as virtually auto-buys.

Customer Review: BAKER’S DOZEN OR SO
What a wonderful place the BBC’s archive of recorded music must be. This time they have allowed us to hear some of the great Dame’s work from 1968 and 1970 at the Aldeburgh festival and from their own studios. Baker was in her prime around then, and I certainly have to agree with the somewhat gushing liner-note that we can hear her at her very best on this disc. The selection itself greatly appeals to me. I already owned Schumann’s Frauenliebe cycle (given in full here) done by von Otter, and also Wolf’s Spanish songbook from Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau out of which she gives us two numbers, so it is fascinating now to own Baker’s versions of these. I expect shortly to own the complete Strauss songs from Fischer-Dieskau, but the two Schubert songs are completely new to me, the other two Schumann songs may or may not be, and although I have heard Haydn’s Arianna before it’s not something one hears each time one turns on the radio, and I welcome it also as a new treasure in my collection. Despite having the `atmosphere’ that comes from a live session, the Aldeburgh items are less vivid on account of the recording. It’s not bad by any means, but the piano sound is rather heavy, and this bothers me just slightly in the Frauenliebe songs and unslightly in the Haydn. This composition is a chamber cantata with piano accompaniment giving us the anguished sentiments of Ariadne as she longs successively for Theseus and for death. It takes rather over a quarter of an hour, dividing in roughly equal parts into two `recitatives’ and two arias, the `recitatives’ being more what we would usually call scenas. There is some lovely and committed singing from Dame Janet here, as indeed there also is in the Schumann. Dame Janet does not choose to sock the latter to us in the way von Otter characteristically does, and I shall always have a particular fondness for von Otter’s exuberant Er der Herrlichste, but I can take it done with a little more maidenly decorum as well, and Baker is outstanding is the grief-laden final song. I just wish that the recording had had a little more immediacy about it. That lack is rectified in the BBC’s studio recordings, and they give us a chance to hear Baker in full voice. The recording may still not be quite up to 2005 standard, but it should not bother anyone either. Schubert, Schumann, Wolf and Strauss all find the singer right at the top of her form, and the piano is distinctly better treated by the recording. I wonder how many of Schubert’s 606 songs I actually know, but the theoretical maximum before hearing this recital was 604. The two here are high-quality Schubert, and Der blinde Knabe is actually a translation of Cibber’s tear-jerker The Blind Boy, which many will recall from our schooldays. The translation is by one Craigher, and I don’t know whether this is the author of the poem to a more famous Schubert masterpiece The Young Nun, although I suppose that’s likely. No texts are provided, and the liner-note is an exasperating string of platitudes and ooh-ah. One reads `These performances give unalloyed pleasure’. Says who, pray? My pleasure is a little alloyed by the recording at Aldeburgh, if I may say so. We also learn `What singles out Dame Janet’s interpretations…is a complete identification with each piece…’ Is this saying that no other singer does that, and if not what (if anything) is it saying? Nevertheless I remain grateful to the BBC for this superb disc. It’s an exhibition disc, letting us hear one great singer and artist at her best, and that does not dispose me to make laborious comparisons. Amid their preoccupations with charters, licence-fees, management restructuring, efficiency drives, digital television and other earthly concerns I hope fervently that they will continue to build up their golden treasury and to keep sharing it with the rest of us.
Customer Review: Extraordinary!
Janet Baker was probably the finest singer produced by the UK, and she is in remarkably fine fettle here: passionate, expressive, fulsome, even expansive. Her live performances as captured here have little of the finicky-ness of some of her studio recordings, but have greater staying power as a result. The Frauenliebe is rivalled only by Brigitte Fassbaender’s extraordinary recording, and certainly eclipses Baker’s two studio recordings of the cycle. Do yourself a favor and bathe in this one. It’s glorious!

Customer Review: Great conducting, great male soloists, poor female soloists
Solti in his later years developed a much better sense of conducting and musical structure, especially after he started working with more Mozart operas. What I find particularly admirable in this recording is how he brings a sense of Mozartian indulgence and forwardness in his second recording, a much greater improvement over his first Decca recording with the same orchestra. I find that the musical textures are lighter and brisker, without a sense of overpacing. Unfortunately, the orchestra is not a very good one, and string articulation tends to get messy at certain points. Solti’s leadership, however, more than makes up for that. The male soloists are very good, with a dark Bryn Terfel as Don Giovanni. Michele Pertusi is also a very good Leporello, although we could hope that the Commendatore could be as good as Kurt Moll in Solti’s first recording. The female soloists are of a different calibre though. Renee Fleming is all jazz and no classical technique as Donna Anna. It is a very slidey, scoopey performance that has been performed without taste. Murray is a mezzo, and handling Donna Elvira’s high tessitura passages finds her strained most of the time. Groop is terrible as Zerlina. All in all, a disaster in the female department. I would recommend Solti’s 1978 recording over this one, or if you want an excellent “dinosaur” old school Don Giovanni (big house, big orchestra, Verdian and Wagnerian voices), go for Haitink’s rendition with the Bayerischer Runkfunk Orchestra with Vanness, Maria Ewing, and Thomas Allen.
Customer Review: Very good in the ears of an opera student
I don’t get all the negative fuss w/ this recording, I really don’t! Whereas this might not be the absolute ultimate recording of Don Giovanni, it certainly is better than quite a few out there that I’ve heard. Whereas this might not be one of the most perfect recordings, I just don’t hear anything wrong w/ it. And usually with opera singers and recordings, I’m as picky and critical as anyone can be. But I just happen to like this recording very much. The voices are very suitable for the roles, and Renee Fleming truly shines as Donna Anna. In my opinion, this is something good to have in every opera lover’s collection.

Customer Review: The Lost Diva - Kathleen Battle
A review of the CD Kathleen Battle - Bel Canto Arias offers the music viewer a glimpse into the miraculous voice of a truly gifted American Diva. In this CD, the listener is treated to some of Bellini’s most cherished selections from the Bel Canto repetoire including: Capuleti Ed I Montecchi, Don Pasquale and La Sonambula. The CD is well produced with extended versions of arias placing the more familar arias in their musical context. Vocal acrobatics and piercing high notes are a gift to behold. Although the top register is clear it at time sounds pushed and somewhat shrill compared to the most colorful lower range. She brings drama and emotion to the arias and this diva should be remembered as one of the great coloratura’s along with Sutherland, Freni, Sumi Jo and of course Cecilia Bartoli. It is a shame that this Diva is now longer heard in most American Opera venues including the MET, but her differences with management and a volatile temper has truncated her career. Any fan of Bellini and the Bel Canto style will surely want to put this treasure in their collection
Customer Review: Beautiful Singing
That’s what Bel Canto means, “beautiful singing” — and that’s what Ms. Battle does here. It’s a style of operatic singing characterized by full, even tones and a brilliant display of vocal technique. Kathleen Battle is from my home town of Portsmouth, Ohio, (a fact of which we are all very proud), and I cannot adequately express how astounding her vocal abilities are. You’ll hear some of the finest examples of her excellence here. These are mostly arias from Italian Opera, all composed by three great masters of that art form, including Bellini, Rossini (my favorite), and, Donizetti. The London Philharmonic Orchestra (along with the Ambrosian Opera Chorus) provides the background music and it’s all flawlessly performed. This is a DDD recording. My highest recommendation for those who would like to hear the best of the best in Opera.

Medieval Iberia: Readings from Christian, Muslim, and Jewish Sources (The Middle Ages Series)

The documents collected here date mostly from the eighth through the fifteenth centuries and have been translated from Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, Castilian, Catalan, and Portuguese by many of the most eminent scholars in the field of Iberian studies. The selections include chronicle materials, poetry, and legal and religious sources, and each is accompanied by a brief introduction placing the text in its historical and cultural setting. Arranged chronologically, the documents are also keyed so as to be accessible to readers interested in specific topics such as urban life, the politics of the royal courts, interfaith relations, or women, marriage, and the family.

For some historians, medieval Iberian society was primarily one of peaceful coexistence and cross-cultural fertilization; others have sketched a harsher picture of Muslims and Christians engaged in an ongoing contest for political, religious, and economic advantage culminating in the fall of Muslim Granada and the expulsion of the Jews in the late fifteenth century. The reality that emerges in Medieval Iberia is more nuanced than either of these scenarios can comprehend; this monumental collection offers unparalleled access to the multicultural complexity of the lands that would become modern Portugal and Spain.

Customer Review: Good stuff
This collection of primary sources concerning the history of Medieval Iberia is quite good for undergraduate study of Muslim Spain, with useful introductions to each source. The predominance of Christian sources may be explained by the fact that many Muslim sources are no longer extant(or did not exist in the first place), particularly concerning the Mozarabic population(Christians under Arab-Berber dominion).
Customer Review: The best anthology of primary sources available
This is the most thorough and up-to-date collection of primary sources relating to the history of medieval Spain yet available. It brings together a vast ocean of important and illustrative Jewish, Christian and Muslim sources, many of which have never before been translated. Readers, especially historians, will find much of value in this carefully-selected and thoughtfully arranged anthology. Few other collections give such a sense of the richness and diversity of medieval Iberian society.

Interesting movie. unfortunately I had this DVD replaced three times and still didn’t get a copy that wasn’t damaged. The outside packaging in perfect condition. The inside product not good. All three replacements were damaged before being sent to me this was evident by the appearance of plastic wrap on DVD being scuffed and bits falling out of the DVD case that were broken. All three replacement copies sent over a two week period sent individually arrived in this manner. Very disappointed in your quality control on this product Amazon. Trish Auckland New Zealand

Customer Review: This was a most gratifying find of a new mystery author…
Oh boy, big difference between this book and the one I just read and reviewed negatively. I really enjoyed this. It was going back in style to the great Agatha Christie stories, and other good British mystery authors who entertain with their dry sense of humor and tongue-in-cheek writing. And even better, is the books take place in an area of the world I am not familiar with, and it sounds so beautiful, I just would love to visit it. WAles sounds like the perfect place for fairies and Camelots, and young constables who don’t take the world too seriously…even if it is serious business he is dealing with. He knows just how to handle it in such a way as to leave the reader wanting to meet this young man and shake his hand. Bowen fills her pages with the beauty of the land, and the colorful languages, and the people with character of their own that would do battle just fine with any Scotch or Irish characters that come along. In fact, they would probably excell them in their excentricities! Leave it to us Americans to import some type of New Age namby-pamby that ends up hiding a mystery, leaving constable Evans to clean up his little community again as well as dealing with the usual set of problems of a young man setting up housekeeping and learning to cook for himself. And Constable Evans has more than his fair share of young women eyeing him for their own purposes, and dealing with the problems the drag themselves into in order to get his attention. Wonderful book, going to get some more by Rhys Bowen. Love the name…what’s it’s meaning? Karen Sadler
Customer Review: Charming As Always
It’s a slow afternoon in the Red Dragon when American Emmy Court walks in. She’s an American working on her doctoral degree on psychic powers in the Celts. After a few minutes conversation, she believes that Betsy, the barmaid, is a perfect candidate and takes her off to the Sacred Grove, a nearby New Age center, to be tested. Constable Evan Evans, meanwhile, is trying to prove to himself and Bronwen that he can survive on his own and has moved across the street from Mrs. Williams. At work, a search for a missing American college student takes him to the Sacred Grove. Something doesn’t feel right. He doesn’t believe in Betsy’s new found powers, either. Until she shows up at his house in the middle of the night claiming to have a vision - that leads to a very dead body. Does Betsy have powers? More importantly, who committed the murder? I’ve come to rely on these books for a comforting trip to a simple village that holds lots of mystery and intrigue. This book was no exception. Ms. Bowen is still at the top of her game, with a book that twists all over the place. I had no clue where this book was going until near the end, and couldn’t put it down. The characters are fun, and the numerous sub-plots keep things moving quickly. I especially enjoyed Evans-the-Post and his new motorbike. Naturally, Betsy gets developed quite a bit here, and it’s nice to see one of the secondary characters get a bit of the spotlight. If you enjoy a very charming setting and characters with intriguing plots, this series is for you. Pick up the first, EVANS ABOVE, and sit back and enjoy.

Customer Review: Enter Sid James
Carry On Constable was a turning point in the series as it marked the first apperance of Sid James. Surprisingly he doesn’t play his usual rogue-like, lecherous old man role as he always did in later entries, instead playing a fair, down-to-earth, good old fashioned policeman who is continually undermined by his superior. Still his performance was a breeze of fresh air in the series. This is basically Carry On Sergeant transferred to a police station. None of it is beleavable of course, but there is certainly plenty of fun to endure and this is perharps one of the best of the black and white Carry On’s. Leslie Phillips, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Connor, all play the blatantly incompetent trainee police-officers who make a mockery of virtually every task they’re given but all turns out good in the end of course - after all this is a Carry On film. Amongst the rest of the cast include Joan Sims as super-efficent WPC Gloria Pasworthy (who Kenneth Connor falls hopelessly in love with in the film), Hattie Jaques as a down-to-earth, understanding officer who enjoys a close friendship with Sid James and an amusing cameo from Joan Hickson playing a loveable, typically English eccentric who is forever drunk and getting arrested on drunken-disorderley charges. Carry On Constable features the series in its prime. It’s as corny as ever and distinctley British but the cozy, old-fashioned feel of the film holds an undeniably timeless quality. Recommended.

Customer Review: COLIN DAVIS’ MOZART CHORAL MASTERPIECES
The original vinyl issue of this album was part of a series of the major Mozart choral works conducted by Colin Davis. Included were Requiem, Great Mass in c, Coronation Mass, Credo Mass and this album. Today all of the items have been reissued on CD, but alas, not as part of a combined CD set. This is about the best performance of the Vespers on recording. Davis, orchestra, chorus and soloists are all on a wonderfully coordinated plane, and I prefer this to those perhaps more historically correct ‘period’ performances. It would be great if Phillips could rerelease all of the Davis’ Mozart choral works on a CD set.
Customer Review: The Ethereal voice of Kiri!
It has been said that all the great composers spent their lives trying to reach heaven, but that Mozart came from there. Well, in the “Vesperae Solennes De Confessore”, Mozart takes the liberty of escorting us there. And as we sublunars stand inside, privileged, under that magnificent vault listening to the music of the heavenly spheres - his music! - we are increasingly rendered awestruck and by the end of “Laudate pueri”, mute as well. Understanding our condition, he then leads us to a small anteroom of heaven to listen to a choir of angels sing the “Laudate Dominum” before escorting us back through the gates to the music of the “Magnificat”. Davis and Te Kanawa take us on this journey. It is a magnificent recording!
